Into The Void

I just realized how odd the combination of half-pants with a fur vest is, but that's really just how confused i am about how to dress weather-accordingly. It's like spring again! Last night we went into town and had the best time just dancing. I blatantly stared at some british girls who were wearing just a tube dress with no tights or jackets. I was wearing my winter down jacket. They have quite a metabolism, that's for sure.

MERCEDES-BENZ CHINA FASHION WEEK | the guests

Model Chen Bi ge

Chinese VIPS and actors like Lu Yi and Miss Universe China 2011, as well as extremely relevant figures in China's contemporary fashion scene, were all amongst the guests during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Beijing. There was a highly inviting and special lounge area available to guests with invitations.

From left: Chen Bi ge, Editor Su Mang, designer Schumacher, and model Liu Wen.

Su Mang. Personally, she is the absolute inspiring figure for me. She is the executive publisher and Editor of HARPER'S BAZAAR CHINA, was awarded the Advanced Individual of 2008 Chinese Creative Industry award, and is considered one of the most influential people in Chinese fashion. (and don't you just love the gray-scale combination of her outfit with that pop of lime yellow?)

The VIP Lounge.

Famous chinese actor Lu Yi.

And this marks the last post of my Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week coverage series! I hope it introduced you to some new designers and facets of Chinese fashion - a field I'm hoping to jump into one day, if not in this coming summer. Thank you all so much for reading and responding! x

MERCEDES-BENZ CHINA FASHION WEEK | three chinese collections

Last time I wrote about the German label Schumacher's show. This time, I'm reviewing three collections by three Chinese designers, each with their own individualistic and vivid vision, some that I like (and understand) better than others.

NE TIGER / This collection is beautiful in its combination of the traditional (the Chinese woman's Qi-Pao, and culturally-significant colors that resonate luck and enthusiasm) with the modern/internationalized. Some of the cuts are so incredibly edgy with an avant-garde silhouette, something that I could imagine Freida Pinto (Or perhaps the Chinese actress Gong-Li) wearing to the oscars. The black backdrop sets everything off vividly.

SCFASHION / Once again, a lot of bright colors within an almost theatrical context. I can easily imagine these being used in The Black Swan or on stage (I'm obviously enamored with Natalie Portman. She's perfect. Period). I've never been too good with haute couture and collections that I can't imagine myself wearing, so I can't say I'm too fond of this collection. But the idea behind it - of extravaganza, of exaggerated and assumed identity - is quite brilliant.

POKPOKER SS2012 / Definitely one of my favorites from the Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week. The looks are simple, modern, clean and straightforwards - a bit like Paul Smith SS12 that I reviewed and squealed over here. And how trippy is that print on the indigo (center) outfit? Love-love-lovely.

OUTFIT | black on black on black

The good thing about not having packed any colored clothes is that when I do my laundry, I don't need to do two separate washes. It's a practical sort of laziness. It's been drearily cold here the past few days, full of fog and more fog. I've started attending law lectures (did i pick the right career?), and the weekend is looking very full already.

MERCEDES-BENZ CHINA FASHION WEEK | slk 200 place

Next to catwalks, high fashion, and parties, there was also the presentation of a new car: the Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 place, which really impressed all the guests. Having revised the old concept - former car presentations being held at a hotel - Merecedes-Benz brought the presentation to a higher level by booking a stylish venue in Peking, complete with opening show and special effects. Afterwards, there was the after-show-party with Chinese socialites and celebrities.

OUTFIT | metallic and leather

Something simple and straight-forward for a rare sunny sunday (my nerdy literal brain cannot help noticing all the sibilance in this sentence). Photos are taken by my dear flatmate Nikki, who is a budding lawyer. This weekend was perfect, full of dancing, surprise birthday celebrations, going out with friends, and delicious champagne. I'm off to dinner later and then a movie screening. Hope you're all having a relaxing sunday!

MERCEDES-BENZ CHINA FASHION WEEK | Schumacher SS11 Show

Opening show: Schumacher SS 2011, a collection combining cashmere, silk, organza and techno-cotton to produce a series of exotic and professional looks. On the runway was China's currently most-booked runway model, Liu Wen, who I first found out on various streetstyle blogs; her dimpled smile coupled with her off-duty outfits are just too adorable. I'm easily infatuated as you can see. Anyway, let's scrutinize some key points in the collection!

1/ Fluorescent yellow. The color application is flawless - the controlled amounts inject the perfect amount of fun and youth into the rather professional ensembles. I love how everything from the blouses to the pants and blazers are all quite loose-fitting, but still maintain a lean-looking silhouette. If I were to intern at an office (hopefully this summer), I'd lovingly slip into one of these for work - they look professional, but not too uptight or strictly-business (not that business people look strict...just their suits sometimes. You know what I mean)

3/ Khaki. Or light-army-green? (I study art history yet I'm hopeless at naming colors..although, to be fair, my friend calls this color yellow so I guess I'm safe for now). The looks look like an investment banker on a business trip to Dubai: girly dress with lingerie-like details at the bottom is combined with a stiff-blazer, or the tailored-looking top and belt mixed with the flowing maxi dress. Casual comfort and controlled business. I want to work in banking now.

3/ Classical White. Clean looks that resonate professionalism and a simplistic, straight-forward style. No accessories or extra colors; relaxing and put-together.

(Liu Wen again, in the most beautiful top and dress combination. Fuchsia works on her like butter on bread. Wow, that was bad.)

Schumacher was definitely a brilliant choice as an opening show - a great representation of German labels, and great use of international Chinese models. Now, if I can get my hand on some fluorescent yellow pants...

MERCEDES-BENZ CHINA FASHION WEEK | A Get-To-Know

Angela Chow, presenter of Miss World 2012

Hi lovely readers, hope you're all doing good! I'm really excited to introduce this week's post-series: The "Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week" in Beijing, which took place from the 24th of October to the 2nd of November. Originally from Beijing but never having lived there, I experience a cultural shock every time I visit in the summer - its progress and evolutionary transformations are beyond inspiring. (Posts from this summer there here, here, and here)

Above is Klaus Maier, CEO of Mercedes-Benz in the country. China is the company's third largest market (after the US and Germany). At the Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week Press Conference this year, it was officially announced that Mercedes-Benz would be the official sponsor for the event that has been taking place since 1997. This both brings the event under a stronger international headlight and highlights the globalized state of China and its fashion scene.

There were shows of Chinese labels Chuyan, Vloy Wu, and SCFASHION, and the premiere presentation of the German label, Schumacher, but more about these designers later!
